Gen 1 earned a permanent spot on a lot of benches, ours included. After a year of pulling shots and pouring V60s on it, we had a list of things we wanted it to do better. Gen 2 is that list, ticked off.
What we upgraded, and why
Live flow rate and brew ratio. Weight and time tell you what happened. Gen 2 also shows your flow rate as a number in real time, plus your coffee-to-water ratio as you pour. A channelling shot or a rushed pour shows up while it’s happening, not after you’ve tasted it. Decafs can extract a little differently, so seeing the flow takes a lot of guesswork out of dialling in.
A toughened glass top with a silicone heat pad. Hot portafilters, steaming carafes and fresh shots are hard on scales. We moved to a toughened glass panel and added a removable silicone heat pad, so heat stays off the electronics and spills wipe straight off.
Slightly larger to fit cups better, same 2kg capacity. At 105 × 101 × 20mm, Gen 2 fits on far more home espresso drip trays. It still weighs anything from 0.3g up to 2kg, so it handles a big batch pour over just as well.
It wakes itself up. Set something over 80g on it, or put the scale back down after you’ve picked it up, and it switches on. No poking buttons with wet hands.
A mute switch. We added a physical switch to turn the beeps on or off, so you can make an early-morning coffee without waking anyone.
Grams or ounces. Double-tap the power button to switch units.

Standard Scales Mode with Timer: Just measure weight manually, and turn timer on/off as required.

Espresso: set it on the drip tray, put your cup down and pull your shot, with time, weight and flow right in front of you.

Pour Over: smart brew timing with live flow rate, brew ratio and total water, all on one screen.
